Parks and Recreation Programs:

Lowell residents have a wealth of possibilities for recreation and entertainment. Tennis, golf, picnicking around the fountain, winter ice skating, field games, or fun on playground equipment are right at hand in Lowell 's town parks. The Parks and Recreation Department offers instruction in sports and crafts and sponsors youth programs and various community events such as the Community Halloween Weekend and the Senior Citizen Christmas Social. Trips to Chicago Bulls, Bears, Black Hawks, White Sox and Cubs games, museums, and excursions to other regional attractions give residents many outings.


The community benefits tremendously from the Lake County Park system and from the Indiana Dunes National Lake shore, forty five miles north on Lake Michigan. Not only are golf, fishing, cross country skiing, swimming and boating available in the county parks, but several parks provide unusual natural environments. The Grand Kankakee Marsh County Park preserves extensive marshes and sloughs abundant with water fowl. Deep River County Park contains a meandering river environment. County Parks also keep residents in touch with history. Buckley Homestead, a nineteenth century farm, hosts a variety of events including an annual Civil War reenactment. The Vietnam Veterans' Memorial at Stoney Run County Park is an ideal spot for contemplation of our more recent history.


At the Indiana Dunes National Lake shore opportunities abound for hiking, swimming, boating, cross country skiing and fishing within the 12,000 acre park which stretches fourteen miles along Lake Michigan. The National Park Service offers many programs related to nature and the environment.


Community Health:

Five major hospitals are within eight to thirty-five miles of Lowell , St. Anthony's in Crown Point being the closest. Several physicians serve Lowell from the Lowell Medical Clinic. Dentists, optometrists, and chiropractors practice in Lowell . The Lowell Health Care Center, and facilities in Crown Point serve extended care needs.


The Lowell community has 911 Emergency Service. Also, two certified mobile intensive care units are housed within the new fire station and provide twenty-four hour services by certified paramedics.


Retail, Service, Banking:

The lively business community in Lowell provides citizens with most goods and services. A number of banks, attorneys, and about 250 businesses serve the Lowell Community. For sport and fitness, residents can find bowling alleys and health clubs locally.


Youth Opportunities:

"What can I do?" Lowell youth find there are plenty of answers to this question. In addition to the soccer league, golf and tennis instruction, the Lowell Parks Department schedules youth activities such as baton twirling and a track and field meet. Eight weeks of summer camp keep young people busy. Other youth opportunities include Girls Softball, Little League, Scouting, 4-H, and Pop Warner Football. Parents looking for day care or after-school care find many options available at several daycare centers, nurseries and preschools.


Senior Opportunities:

Because the Lowell community places high value on traditions and family living, Senior Citizens form an important part of the community. Senior Citizens looking for social events planned especially for mature adults will find that the Lowell Parks and Recreation Department offers a variety of special events and outings. The Lowell Seniors Club and groups associated with various churches also provide service and events. South Lake Community Services provides hot lunches each weekday at the Lowell Community Center. Also a variety of holiday parties and daily activities take place at the Center. Senior transpiration is available.
